History

On a flight from Oslo to Tromso in December 2001, Geir Håvard Kvalheim sat next to a scientist from the University of Tromso who was researching a method of stabilizing fish oils, one of Norway's most important industries, for export to international markets. He told Geir about the discovery of Spermine. They knew that antioxidants had been shown to be effective preservatives on oils and started experiments with all the known strong antioxidants. It tool several years of unsuccessful trialling before one of the scientists came up with the idea of using Spermine wich he knew a little about. The results amazed them. Spermine delivered far better results than any of the other known antioxidants they had investigated earlier in their project and had an effect that was nearly 30 times stronger than Vitamin E. This was a breakthrough!

 

The sicentists had found out that Spermine was a natural component of all living organisms (with particularly high doses in skin) and a vital part of our body's natural protection mechanism. By the millennium, they had been able to synthesize this life dependent antioxidant, calling it Spermine™. This ingredient was now available for skincare formulations. The challenge for the scientists was how to introduce Spermine™ into the commercial arena.

 

Geir was absolutely fascinated to hear about this discovery. Three months later, he resigned to work on the Spermine™ project full time. He spent the first two years learning everything he could by which time they were able to prepare a simple skincare forumlation called 'Spermin', fill and hand label 3000 white tubes and sell it to skincare clinics in Norway. The results were phenomenal and it was immediately apparent that the product was achieving outstanding results.

 

Geir Håvard, who is CEO & Founder of Scandinavian Dermal Group and his team expanded the brand and launched it professionally across Scandinavia in 2006. It has taken a further 4 years to prepare the formulations for retail and February 2011 sees the retail launch of Skin Science in the UL and Ireland exclusive to Harvey Nichols.
